A public health initiative

The Gym Safety Council is a UK-based public health initiative that sets safety and maintenance standards for fitness facilities — supporting operators, trustees and engineers through structured risk assessments, equipment reliability tools and training resources.

Independent guidance on equipment safety

The Gym Safety Council is a volunteer-led, engineering-led group set up to raise standards on gym equipment safety and preventative maintenance in the UK. It publishes guidance on risk assessments, inspection standards, what counts as a pass or a fail, and how to take a piece of kit out of service properly. For an owner the value is having something independent to work from when writing your own procedures, rather than deciding on your own what a reasonable standard looks like.

A maintenance routine that holds up

Their preventative maintenance guidance sets out an eight-step process covering the things that actually cause incidents: bolts working loose, cables fraying, electrical testing being skipped. Following a documented routine matters twice over. It keeps members safe, and it gives you a record if an insurer or a solicitor ever asks what checks you were doing and when. Most clubs already do some of this. The gap is usually writing it down.

Training the people doing the checks

The council runs accredited vocational gym maintenance courses at levels one to three, aimed at bringing staff to a recognised standard of competence rather than learning as they go, with continuing development for technicians. It was founded by Jon Isaacs, a chartered engineer and IET member, with a team drawn from engineering, teaching and equipment repair.

FAQ

Gym Safety Council and ClubRight

Does Gym Safety Council integrate with ClubRight?
Not directly. Gym Safety Council is a supplier ClubRight works with and recommends, rather than a system that passes data back and forth with the platform. Only a small number of ClubRight Connect partners are direct integrations, and their pages say so explicitly. If that distinction matters to what you’re planning — particularly with hardware — ask before you order.
What does Gym Safety Council do?
UK gym safety standards body.
Do I have to use Gym Safety Council to use ClubRight?
No. Nothing in the ClubRight Connect directory is a requirement and nothing is tied to your account. Use your own supplier if you already have one — the directory exists to save you the research, not to steer you.
Does ClubRight charge extra for this?
No — ClubRight doesn’t add a fee for a partner being listed or connected. Whatever Gym Safety Council charges for their own product is between you and them. Nobody pays to appear in this directory.
