£6,000 saved a year, just by switching how they take payments

Royston Health Fitness — trading as CrossFit Royston — was happy enough on TeamUp. Then they did the maths on what percentage-based payment fees were really costing them.

Before ClubRight
  • Paying 2% per transaction via Stripe and GoCardless through TeamUp
  • High volume of smaller payments (£50 to £100) making percentage fees expensive
  • Losing roughly £6,000 a year to processing fees alone
After ClubRight
  • Flat 40p per Direct Debit — no percentage, no surprises
  • £6,000 saved annually and reinvested into the business
  • A simpler, cleaner platform that's easier for the whole team to use

A thriving CrossFit community paying too much to collect memberships

Royston Health Fitness is the new owner of CrossFit Royston, an established gym set at The Heath, where members train alongside open space and real views. With 160 members and capacity to grow to 300, the club was in good shape, except for one thing: payment processing fees were quietly eating into the business every month.

The problem with percentage fees

Running on TeamUp with Stripe and GoCardless, the club was paying 2% on every transaction. For a gym taking lots of smaller payments — £50 here, £80 there, £100 for a block of sessions — that percentage adds up fast.

“We get a lot of micro payments and adding all together, that is a lot of money on the year if you are charging 2%. We are earning that way around £6,000 a year with that payment system, which is a lot.”
— The team at Royston Health Fitness

The maths that made the decision easy

ClubRight Pay, powered by London and Zurich, charges a flat 40p per Direct Debit. Not a percentage — a fixed 40p, regardless of how large the payment is. The annual saving was immediate and simple to calculate.

“London and Zurich, your payment provider in ClubRight Pay, is charging 40p per transaction. So not a percentage, but a steady low fee.”
— The team at Royston Health Fitness

Six thousand pounds a year, back in the business, not paid to a payment processor.

A platform that's easier to use too

The financial case drove the switch, but once the club was on ClubRight, the platform itself made a positive impression too.

“It’s improved. Looks more simple and clearer. It is easier to click and change.”
— The team at Royston Health Fitness

With capacity to nearly double their membership, the focus is on growth, and on a payment model that works harder for them as they scale.

“The payment system is the best on the market from my opinion right now.”
